Holiday season is fast approaching, and here at Dessert Works we've got a full menu of your fall favorites just in time for Thanksgiving!  Not only do we have some fabulous seasonal desserts like a Rustic Apple Tart and a Pear & Cranberry Galette, but our fall cake flavor, Caramel Apple, is back by popular demand!
  Our Thanksgiving specials include a variety of 9" seasonal pies including Traditional Pumpkin, Maple Pecan, Double Crust Apple, and many more. If you're looking for something new and different this Thanksgiving, try our delicious Maple Pumpkin Mousse Torte!
  While we try to keep our items stocked and ready to go, it is always a good idea to order in advance to insure availability.    
  Place Thanksgiving orders by Sunday 11/24 to guarantee they are ready for pick up on 11/27.

This delicious, tender spice cake is  filled with light & fluffy pumpkin mousse, then rolled to  create the roulade. Garnished with fresh whipped cream and confectioner’s sugar.

Fall Menu 2013

 It's almost fall again, and here at Dessert Works we are getting ready to bring out all of your fall favorites.  Not only will we have some fabulous seasonal pastries and desserts, but our fall cake flavor, Caramel Apple, is back by popular demand!  Starting this week, we are going to be releasing some of our seasonal items to have them ready for Rosh Hashanahstarting with our Pumpkin Spice Roulade, Maple Pumpkin Poundcake, Rustic Apple Tart and Pear & Cranberry Gallette.   The full fall menu will be available starting September 14th.  Feel free to call and inquire on availability of these items, or stop by the store.  While we try to keep our items stocked and ready to go, it is always a good idea to order in advance to insure availability.

Very Hungry Caterpillar

A few weeks ago, we had a customer come into the store looking to get a baby shower cake.  They wanted something special and had a Very Hungry Caterpillar theme in mind.  Specifically, the new little guy's bedroom was to be decorated with the Very Hungry Caterpillar set from Pottery Barn Kids:


See?  How cute!  We took the colors from this bedding set and made a truly adorable and memorable cake! Take a look and let us know what you think!

Meet Cris



Name:  Cris Jimenez

Hometown:  I am originally from Worcester, MA.

Education:  I attended Le Cordon Bleu for Pastry and Baking

What does your job consist of?  Here at Dessert Works I work in the cake department.  I help with all aspects of filling and decorating cakes.

How did you end up at Dessert Works?  After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu, I was looking for a job that I would love.  I heard about Dessert Works from a friend who just so happened to work at DW.  I applied and have been here happily ever since.

What is your favorite item we have at Dessert Works?  It’s hard to pick just one, but I was able to narrow it down to 3: the Carrot Cake, Three Berry Gallette, and the Ripe Red Raspberry cake!

What is your favorite part of your job?  My favorite part of working at Dessert Works is being able to do what I love for work every day.  Another part I love is all of the new friends I have made while working here.

The "Finishing" Touch

Hello Dessert Works Fans!  We wanted to take some time in our blog to provide a little cake education and share some beautiful creations with you.  As many of you know, typically, we finish most of our cakes in a wonderfully smooth layer of Vanilla Buttercream, Chocolate Buttercream, or Fresh Whipped Cream. However, that is not the only option!  Lately, we have been noticing a lot of people want a more rustic, vintage, or home style feel for their big event.

One way to do this is by giving the cake a Spackle finish.  This looks just how it sounds, like the finish on many walls and ceilings, but so much more delicious!  Check out this beautiful cupcake stand arrangement which features Rolled Chocolate flowers and, of course, a cake with a Spackle finish!


Here is another example of a Spackle finish on a 2 tier cake.  The bottom tier has added height and the fresh hydrangeas make this cake simple, yet elegant.


 Another option is for us to do what we call "an upward diagonal swoop."  This technique can be done on any cake frosted in Buttercream and adds an extra special touch and feel to your cake.


Horizontal Banding is another way to give your cake a special look.  This example shows not only Horizontal Banding, but also Ombre colors.  Ombre means the color has a gradual fading effect.


Below is a set of 3 cakes each with a different finish.  This is a fun way to have different flavor options available to your guests, or, allow you to have multiple cakes if you simply can't decide which look you like best!

This last picture shows how beautiful combining different styles in the same cake can be.  This 4 tier has alternating tiers, 2 with Spackle finish and 2 with a smooth finish and Champagne Dot design work.


Whatever your event may be, changing up the finish on your cake is a great way to add a special touch. We hope this gave you some new inspiration and ideas for the future!

Go Bruins!

In honor of the Bruins game tonight, we wanted to take a moment and share some of our Bruins inspired treats!  Go B's!!

Here come the Grads!

Graduation season is upon us and it's not too late to order your favorite Grad a beautiful cake!  We have several graduation options available, as well as being able to create something custom with at least 2 weeks notice. Check out some graduation cakes we have done in the past!

A standard design is a great way to congratulate the new Graduate.  Flowers and ribbon colors 
can be changed to match  your schools colors!
This standard cake option incorporates our delicious chocolate covered strawberries, 
Buttercream flowers, and a small graduation cap and diploma.
This cake can also be customized with your choice of colors.  The graduation cap on top is 
made out of Rolled Chocolate and is completely edible!
This cake, stacked to look like school books, is considered a custom request.  
With at least 2 weeks notice, we can personalize it to fit the interests of your Graduate
This 2 tier cake includes many of the elements from the other cakes all rolled into one.  Rolled Chocolate Graduation Cap, Edible Image, Shooting stars... What more could the new grad want?
